Introduction

Attappady is a backward revenue block of Palakkad district of Kerala state. It has an area of 745 sq.km and encompasses three panchayats. It has a population of 66,171(2001 Census).Tribes form almost half of the population (27,121) and are represented in three sects called Irula, Muduga and Kurumba. They live in hamlets in and around the hills of Attappady. There are 188 such tribal hamlets. As the landscape is mostly hilly area lack of play grounds in schools or colleges makes difficult for the children of Attapady to engage in sports thus makes them to lead to consumption of alcohol and other drugs.

Alcohol is the most frequently used substance by teenagers in the Attappady region. Significant statistics regarding alcohol use in teens include that about half of junior high school students and senior high school students drink alcohol on a monthly basis, and 14% of teens have been intoxicated at least once in the past year. Nearly 8% of teens who drink say they drink at least five or more alcoholic drinks in a row (binge drink).

·        Alcohol decreases teens’ ability to pay attention.

·        Teens that have experienced alcohol withdrawal tend to have difficulties with memory.

·        The teenage brain exposed to alcohol is at risk for being smaller in certain parts.

·        The younger a person is when they begin drinking, the more likely they are to develop a problem with alcohol.

During the teenage period students had immense energy, but those energies are not used for result oriented practices. This one resulted to the high prevalence alcohol consumption and drug usage practices. Attappady had no facilities for recreational activities. The high energy in youth wasted and misused. For the elimination of this one need to engage the youth in recreational activities.

Not only this, the youngsters in Attappady are facing a number of unemployment related problems. They have no job opportunities in Attappady in comparison to other places. This makes them mentally down and they are forced to take to alcohol. They are talented but have no opportunities to show it. This is why Santhi Medical information Centre is looking to open a sports academy in Attappady.
